Island, by Komi Naoshi

I've always loved reading one-shots because once an idea is introduced, all I want is to know the ending. Perhaps the preference of reading one-shots (as opposed to serial manga) was born out of the poor internet connection I had back when I was in my alma mater, but it seems I still have that preference. But most one-shot mangas that I've read had been disappointing, fine or interesting read. But none quite touched my heart like Island by Komi Naoshi.

The beauty of one-shot is the focus on the main plot, hence a lack of divergence from the original idea of the whole story. But one-shot mangas are like short stories, a huge challenge to write, not to capture and hold on the readers' attention like long/serial stories, but to present the whole story within such small frames, such short length and yet able to impress the readers. And Island did just this, with an end that is not definite, just like life, hope and tomorrows.

Have a go at reading it yourself. It won't take you long. Just 44 pages of brilliance.
